If you believe in reincarnation, you’ll want to come back as one of Ultima Thule’s dogs. This is canine heaven-on-earth. Leftovers from a never idle, tantalizingly aromatic gourmet kitchen... back scratches on demand. … endless animal tracks to sniff, scat to roll in, bush critters to chase …twenty two hours of sunshine a day to laze in… what’s not to love?
Meet a few of the crew:
Dusty Rose, one of the original husky sled dogs on Ellie’s first racing team, is eighteen year old this summer – well on her way to the title of oldest dog with the best appetite in Alaska. She came into the house one day early in her ‘career’ and never left. Never again part of a mushing team – she became an important part of a family.
Six month old big-footed, wide-mouthed, shoe-snatching Bander Snatch is the new kid on the block – if shoes bloom where they’re planted we should have a bumper crop of native Alaskan shoe-berries this summer.
Berkley, the bush hound, had a brief bout with celebrity when he encountered a Grizzly Bear on our runway two weeks ago. Unfortunately Berkley was more committed to scents than sense. After thirty stitches, two drains and ten days indoors wearing the ultimately embarrassing satellite-dish-look-alike around his neck, Berkley’s back outside hanging with the rest of the ‘crew’.
Like everything else at Ultima Thule, dog food has to be flown in – 240 pounds every month!
